From 3rd-14th October 2010, India will stage an event for lifetime in form of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010. The sports fiesta has already been touted as India's entry into organizing more of professional sports in the near future and is expected to add glitters to India's crown. However, some people are of the view that preparations for the Commonwealth games are not up to the mark. Let us read about the complete truth.
Before we read about the preparations for Commonwealth (CWG) games, let us first read about how India won the bid.
India became only the third developing country of the world to host the Commonwealth Games after it made a last-minute bid in November of 2003 to provide $7.2 million to train athletes bettering offer by Canada ($3.8 million to train athletes) before the voting. New Delhi was the choice and it got 46 votes against 22 votes that went for Hamilton (Ontario, Canada).
In the Past
The preparation journey was not as happy as the Indian government and Indians wanted it to be. The Indian Olympic Association vice-chairman Raja Randhir Singh remarked in January 2005 that Delhi was not ready to host the Commonwealth Games. To add to the woes, Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell remarked that the preparations for the CWG games were very slow and way behind schedule. Fennell went on to say that he would be seeking intervention of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, to save the games from becoming a fiasco.
Some members of the Indian Olympic Committee said that Commonwealth Games (India) may witness stagnant procurement processes within the organizing committee. Some members of the public said that one of the biggest problems why Commonwealth Games India will be a flop-show is because it is virtually impossible for even the government agencies to get permissions from other agencies for CWG game preparations. Commonwealth Games News suggesting that India may not be the best place to host the Commonwealth Games 2010 was adding to the woes. If that was not all, inflation rose to dramatic heights ever since India won the CWG games and continues till now.
A Breather finally!
Suresh Kalmadi, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) remarked in May 2009 that the executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) expressed complete satisfaction with Commonwealth Games India.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been expressing complete confidence that the city will not be disappointing commonwealth countries and its residents with Commonwealth Games Delhi. Delhi government’s Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta, senior officials of Delhi government and officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Police and other departments have been working hard and tirelessly to prove their real mettle.
The Present Scenario
With only a few months left for the Commonwealth Games Delhi, the situation has not improved. The roads are still in bad shape, rooms for athletes and members still not ready, the city is as dirty as ever, and commutation is likely to bring a bad name to the country. However, things have slightly improved but the country, particularly its citizens need to stand up to ensure cleanliness and support to the Delhi and Indian government. It is worth mentioning here that not any amount of government intervention and support are enough unless the common people understand that they need to get their acts together and very soon else the future is bleak, to say the least.
What the Future holds?
India can only hope that the momentum behind every promise for Commonwealth Games 2010 is more than good enough allowing it to make the event a good show. The prospects of a fiasco can still not be ruled out and if that happens, that will seriously dent image of the country, especially when it comes to future sport event bids.
In short, every one is just expressing hopes that Commonwealth Games 2010 do not prove to be a debacle else the blame games will start between government departments and the common man will be facing more pains.
