Forget Recession Indian Automobile Still Booms With Minor Hiccups

Recession period has taken a beating on all market sectors around the world. It was looking as if the economic meter is now looking to gear up but the market conditions in Europe and US created the market fear again. But Indian market still looks hot with FDI inflows and market still looks strong with good money power. The same is with Indian Automobile sector which has shown a great sense of improvement even with growing fuel prices which has put a break occasionally on buying spirit of Indians.

According to some Automobile marketing research here are some facts on Indian Automobile industry –

- 6905 passenger cars are sold per day in India
- Alto is leading the passenger car table with 33,118 cars sold in the year 2010
- Around 30% jump in hatchback car segment in 2010
- Ford looking to invest heavily

In this article we are looking at major milestones the Indian Automobile sector has crossed since 1983 along with growth in number of cars on Indian roads.

1983 saw the launch of first small car in India, Maruti which was a joint collaboration with Suzuki. At that moment 44952 cars were on the Indian road. Since, the market was looking to the growth path car production was delicensed which marked the entry of global car manufacturers in Indian market.

Year 1986 saw the first major Auto Expo held in New Delhi which brought latest technology and cars to the general public. This year saw number of cars almost more than double in 3 years' time. But it was still talking some time for the Indian roads take the taste of new models. By 1994 only three car manufacturers namely Maruti Suzuki, Premier Padmini and HM ruled the Indian roads which had a total of 265000 cars on Indian roads.

Then came revolution in Indian automobile sector with the entry of Hyundai which launched Santro that challenged the monopoly market of Maruti Suzuki. By the next year though some more new market entrants hit the Indian road with car models like Matiz and a major Indian company Tata set up car manufacturing plant.

As the competition in hatchback segment was about to begin and Maruti's Swift revolutionized this car segment. It has been 6 years to the roll out of Swift car and it still holds the market with extra vengeance and gifts great amount of support to Indian car manufacturer Maruti.

Major car launches have been made since then and new car manufacturers seeing a great potential in Indian market started entering Indian market. Companies like Skoda, BMW, Mercedes, Volks Wagen and many others have entered this big Indian market with ten's of new variants launched every year.
