Motels are among the most practical places to stay in for travelers on a budget, given the fact that they are far more affordable than hotels. However, they are not exactly the most preferred. This is because safety has always been an issue where motels are concerned. And unfortunately, there have been too many reported incidents of theft, rape, and other crimes in motels that give credence to this reputation. This does not mean, however, that all motels are unsafe. It is still possible to find reasonably priced motels that can guarantee your and your family's safety during your stay.

Here is a safety checklist to keep in mind if you are planning to stay in any of these motels:

1. Before getting out of your car, check the perimeter of the motel. Are there suspicious-looking individuals loitering around the outside area of the place? If there are, it is always better to drive a few more minutes to another motel. Even if there are no strangers hanging around the entrance of the motel, but your gut instinct tells you to move on, then it's always best to follow your instinct. There are times when your senses are able to assess danger faster than your logical thought can process it.

2. Once you have checked in and are led to your room, do a thorough visual inspection. See if there are hidden cameras or holes under the sink or in walls that connect both rooms. If you find them, call the police, file a report, and look for another motel to stay in.

3. Always use peepholes when answering knocks at your door. Many motels have peepholes for both adults and children. It is best to explain to your child never to open the door without your knowledge. Also, always ascertain the identity of any person at the door, especially if you do not recognize him.

4. Always familiarize yourself with the escape plan in case fire or other emergencies occur. The information that you need is usually placed behind the door of your room.

5. Never forget to use the deadbolt once you are already inside your room. Before you check in, ask if the motel has electronic keycards and deadbolts for their rooms. This provides more security to guests than the traditional lock and key.

Any place today is dangerous if you are not careful. So, always be on the lookout for possible danger, especially when it comes to motels. Being alert is the first thing that will keep you from danger.
