One extraordinary woman decided to change her life by enrolling in an eight month pharmacy technician course. She articulated her desire for a new career. Little did she know that the overall health care industry is a field on the rise.

This 34 year old former retail cashier says she didn't realize it was so big until she went to school, at the Garden City, New York campus of a local educational institution. Occupations and training programs such as these appeal to increasing numbers of people, who realize the security of the health care industry.

Their allure grabs people, from those looking for upgrades to those returning to the workforce. They also attract those who are seeking retirement careers or, having just lost a job or fearing being laid off, are looking for a field that seems to offer security and plenty of opportunities.

Be that as it may, experts advocate full examination of each profession, taking into account both the demand for labor and the supply of fresh graduates competing for slots. The need for health care workers will continue to rise undoubtedly, due to two factors. Put simply, there are more elderly people who need care, and many positions will be left open by retiring professionals.

A labor market analyst for New York's state labor department says that as economic uncertainty continues to rise, people definitely look to fields they think have more stability. Even if the health care field has proven resistant to most change, there is always the chance that it can be affected in the next storm. Therefore, he advocates a fuller investigation of a desired occupation to see longer term prospects and if it fits one's needs, in addition to looking at department figures.

In Hoffman Estates, Illinois, one higher education institution requested permission from the state and accreditation board to be linked to an existing college that specializes in allied medical care. In addition to current offerings, like business, criminal justice, design and health care administration, health care courses would become a main attraction. A company representative put it this way.

The achievement of this local institution can be attributed to the larger, growing health care field in the country. The president of the college says that people feel health care jobs are secure, because direct patient care cannot be outsourced.

The college is one of 19 campuses in Garden City, New York and can trace its roots as far back as 1866. With only a couple of exceptions, all 17 of the first graduates of the pharmacy technician program were hired within two months of graduation.
